Turn off your cell phones, and unplug yourself. Here’s your
excuse to pack a picnic, bring the family and friends, and unwind with the
Nevada County Concert Band at this first of three free summer concerts at
Pioneer Park's bandshell. The 60-piece band under the direction of Cheryl Woldseth will take
listeners on a journey "South of the Border" music from central and
south America. There will be crowd favorites like the Incan dance
"El Condor Pasa" (made famous by Paul Simon in "If I
Could"), "The Girl from Ipanema," and a medley of
mariachi-style folk songs. The trumpet section will be featured in Herb
Alpert's "Mexican Shuffle," and a clarinet quartet will perform
"Tico Tico," made famous by the fruit-hatted dancer Carmen Miranda.
And the rhythms continue with songs from the Caribbean, Jamaica, Cuba,
Brazil, and more. |
With KNCO's retired announcer Jim Kerr as Master of Ceremonies and
local actor/vocalist Brian Warrensford taking part, there are a few surprises
too, especially when Woldseth involves the audience in the fun. So fill your picnic basket with Mexican food to eat on a Peruvian
blanket. Bring your camera, and be a tourist (and enter your picture at
this summer's Nevada County Fair). Wear beads and dance like you're in
Rio de Janeiro. Relax, and enjoy yourself with the free music of the
Nevada County Concert Band. |
